This classic Irish soda bread is simple, hearty, and perfect with butter, soups, or BBQ sides. It has a crisp crust, tender crumb, and comes together quickly with no yeast.
Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1½ cups buttermilk
2 tbsp melted butter
1 tbsp sugar (optional for slight sweetness)
Optional add-ins
½ cup raisins
½ cup shredded Irish cheddar
1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use a cast iron skillet.
Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl combine flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
Add liquids
Stir in buttermilk and melted butter until a soft dough forms.
Shape the loaf
Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently form into a round loaf.
Score the top
Cut a deep X on top of the loaf (traditional Irish style).
Bake
Bake 35–40 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
Cool slightly and serve
Slice and serve warm with butter.
