Cast Iron Smoked Chocolate Cake

Girls Gone Grillin’ style — deep chocolate flavor with a subtle kiss of smoke.

Ingredients

  • Chocolate Cake
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup melted butter (or neutral oil)
  • 1 cup hot brewed coffee (enhances chocolate)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • Optional Add-Ins
  • ½ cup chocolate chips (extra fudgy)
  • ¼ tsp espresso powder (bold chocolate)
  • Toppings (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Chocolate drizzle or berries

Smoker Setup

Temp: 325–350°F

Wood: Apple or cherry (light smoke works best for dessert)

Skillet: 10-inch cast iron, lightly buttered

Instructions

Preheat the smoker

Bring smoker to 325–350°F using a mild fruit wood.

Mix dry ingredients

In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add wet ingredients

Stir in melted butter, hot coffee, vanilla, and egg until just combined.

Fold in chocolate chips if using.

Into the skillet

Pour batter into buttered cast iron skillet and smooth the top.

Smoke it

Place skillet in the smoker. Smoke 35–45 minutes, rotating once if needed.

Cake is done when the center is just set and a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.

Rest & serve

Let rest 10 minutes. Serve warm straight from the skillet.

Pro Tips

Less is more with smoke — fruit woods keep it dessert-friendly.

For a lava-style center, pull the cake around 30–32 minutes.

Add a scoop of ice cream and let it melt into the smoky chocolate goodness
