Cast Iron French Onion Chicken (Girls Gone Grillin’ Style)

This one’s a cozy, skillet classic—juicy chicken, deeply caramelized onions, and melty cheese, all finished in one cast-iron pan. Perfect for weeknights or when you want comfort food with grillin’ flair.

Ingredients

  • 4 Chicken thighs
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsGirls Gone Grillin’ S.P.G. Plus a Kiss of Onion BBQ seasoning
  • (or salt, pepper & garlic if needed)
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • (provolone or Swiss work great too)
  • Fresh parsley or thyme, for garnish

Instructions

1. Sear the Chicken

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat with olive oil.

Season chicken generously with SPG.

Sear 4–5 minutes per side until golden (doesn’t need to be cooked through).

Remove chicken and set aside.

2. Caramelize the Onions

Reduce heat to medium.

Add butter and sliced onions.

Cook 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown

Stir in thyme, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth.

Simmer 2–3 minutes, scraping up all the flavor.

3. Bring It Together

Nestle chicken back into the onions.

Spoon onions over the top.

Sprinkle generously with Gruyere.

4. Bake

Transfer skillet to oven.

Bake 12–15 minutes, until chicken reaches 165°F and cheese is bubbly.

Optional: broil 1–2 minutes for extra golden cheese

Garlic mashed potatoes

Buttered egg noodles

Roasted green beans or Brussels sprouts

Crusty bread to soak up that onion gravy
